Another Earth (2011)
This was quite a film. Part of my appreciation came from the setting, as eastern Connecticut doesn’t get portrayed in the movies very often. Especially during the winter, especially when none of the characters have anything to do with New York City. When it’s just old trees and old houses and long drives and train rides and the cold ocean.
But what really made the film worth seeing was the complete, self-contained vision expressed by the filmmakers, Brit Marling (star, co-writer) and Mike Cahill (director, editor, co-writer). Script, cinematography, performance, pacing, it all felt cohesive and connected, each element helping drive the story and the feeling of the film. You don’t get that very often any more. Think Brick without the gimmicky dialogue, Primer with a logical plot, Melancholia with fewer zeroes on the end of the budget.
Worth seeing.
