It’s sort of funny that GIFs are blowing up in media at the moment, but because Tumblr — the only widely used social platform that supports GIFs — has a 1mb filesize limit on them, all the media outlets, even The Times, are resigned to producing pretty awful GIFs.
It’s not impossible to make good GIFs under 1MB, of course, but it does require a fairly advanced understanding of image compression and animation — knowledge that hasn’t been particularly valuable for about fifteen years.
